Rite of Passage

It wasn't planned. It just kind of happened. We were at the mall today and Maddie asked me to get her ears pierced. Well - let's back up. She asked me yesterday to get her ears pierced. I figured that the time was coming that we would do it. I just didn't think it would be today!

However, it was. Brian was at soccer. Maddie, Aidan and I went to the mall because I had to return some things. As soon as we got in the car, Maddie asked me if today was the day that she was getting her ears pierced.

I actually didn't think it was a bad idea. Once we got to the mall, I returned my items and Maddie was still talking about her ears. I told her that It might hurt - but just for a second and asked her if she would be okay with that. She told me that it was fine and she was ready and she would just say, "Ouch."

We arrived at the Piercing Pagoda and after signing my life away on all their paperwork, they were ready for us. We picked out some earrings and Maddie sat in the "piercing" chair. Luckily two people were working so they could do it at the same time. On the count of three, Maddie had new earrings. She looked a little stunned - but she didn't even cry! I was so proud of her. They showed her the earrings in the mirror and she was so happy. As we walked through the mall to the car, she was proudly showing random people her earrings.

I have to admit, I was a little nervous what Brian would think of his baby girl having earrings. He didn't want her to get her ears pierced until she was older. Much older. But- my rule was that as soon as she was old enough and aware of it - then I would let her do it. And she seemed very mature about it and that is why I let her do it. Plus - I am the mommy and this is a mother -daughter thing and really - should the daddy have much say in this? Right. I think not.

Anyway - after the ear piercing, we drove straight to Brian's soccer game so Maddie could show him the earrings. It was on the way home - so we just stopped in. I held my breath wondering what Brian's reaction would be. He looked a little shocked for half a second and then he recovered and seemed fine with the whole thing. I was glad I did it.

My little girl is growing up!!!
