And Down He Went

We had a little mishap in the Graber household yesterday. Aidan fell backward. In his chair. He hurt himself. He cried. I felt like a bad mother.

A little background - We have a lip that is under our table. Aidan thinks it's really funny to sit in his booster seat and get his feet on that little lip and teeter and rock the chair backwards. Normally, I am sitting right next to him so I can make sure he doesn't do this and especially so he doesn't actually fall backwards. If I am not near the little guy - I just pull the chair away from the table so he won't fall.

Well - I was ladling turkey soup into bowls. My back was turned. Brian had gone downstairs with Maddie. No one ever pulled the chair AWAY from the table. The next thing I knew, I heard "SMACK" which was immediately followed by a lot of crying. I turned and looked and the chair was on the floor, along with Aidan. I ran over to him and unstrapped him and he cried for a few minutes. He was clearly scared and upset. The loud smack that I heard was the top of the chair that broke when it hit the hardwood floor. My back was turned - so I really have no idea if Aidan's head hit the floor. In fact, I really don't want to know. The thought of his little head hitting anything makes me feel so awful.

Anyway - for about 10 scary minutes, I really thought we were going to have to take him to the ER. He just seemed kind of out of it. He was quiet and it seemed like something was hurting him. He was sitting fine - but he wouldn't crawl. I called the pediatrician and we waited for 10 minutes for her to call us back. During those 10 minutes, it was like a light switch was flipped. He snapped out of it and started pointing and babbling and crawling and doing all those things that he normally does. By the time the pediatrician called me back - he was totally fine and she told me just to watch for any weird signs.

Today - he seems fine - like it never happened. However - he is back in the high chair. There is no more booster seat sitting for him! And the high chair is far AWAY from the table. He keeps pointing to the chair and gesturing to it. I think he remembers his fall and he didn't like it - not one bit!
