Born in Troy on December 5, 1920, Marty was the son of the late Martin J. and Catherine Hickey Hughes. He was raised in Mechanicville and graduated from the LaSalle Institute in Troy, class of 1939. Marty later attended Siena College in Loudonville and St. Michael's College in Burlington, Vt. He enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II serving in the Pacific theater of operations. He was honorably discharged in 1946 with the rank of lieutenant and returned to the Capital District. He was employed in the purchasing department of the D&H Railway. He was a member of the Wolfert's Roost Country Club, the Country Club of Troy and was a member of the Holy Name Society at Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Latham. Marty's family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to doctors and staff of the Veterans Hospital in Albany for the concern they showed and the care they gave to him during his four month stay.
