Cell phones in church

Brian and I went to 4 PM mass on Saturday. As usual, we went upstairs to sit in the balcony. That has become our usual spot since we have kids. It is just easier to sit upstairs where we are not disturbing anyone.

Anyway, it seems like a lot more people have been gravitating upstairs for mass. Yesterday in mass, a family sat 2 rows in front of us. They had 2 daughters who were about 7 years old and 10 years old. Throughout mass they proceeded to play games on their parents cell phones. I was a bit puzzled by this behavior. What puzzled me even more was that the father was coaching his daughter on the game and more engrossed in the game than he was in mass.

This went on for the duration of mass until it was time for Communion.

Now, I am the first to admit that we have brought stuff to church to distract Maddie. However, Maddie is also only 3. And - we are trying to stray away from bringing anything at all to church. In fact, yesterday, the only thing Maddie brought was a teddy bear. So - I was a bit appalled to see these older kids playing cell phone games.

Interesting. Just wanted to vent. Thanks for listening.
