Just in the past month it has been brought to my attention that High Fructose Corn Syrup is bad for you. I won't bore you with the details - but if you want to learn more - then click here.
It can be all a bit overwhelming trying to shop healthy. However, I am taking it in strides and trying to be a bit more heathy and pay more attention what is in certain foods. Not only for me - but for Brian and the kids. If I can find a product that doesn't have high fructose corn syrup, then I am going to buy that one. If I can try to buy something that is organic - then I am leaning that way too. Nothing too crazy - but just trying to be more "green" and more aware of what kind of stuff that we are putting in our bodies.
Anyway - I went to the grocery store today and was taking extra time to read all the ingredients in everything that I was putting in the cart. You would be amazed. High Fructose Corn Syrup is in EVERYTHING! I was in shock. Syrup, ketchup, jelly, bread, ginger ale and yogurt. It was a bit frustrating. I couldn't even find a syrup that didn't have the ingredient. The alternative? Buy all natural syrup. All the yogurt had high fructose corn syrup. I started thinking about all the yogurts that I have consumed in my life. All the ketchup, all the bread, and all the soda. Ick.
When I came home, I told Brian that I wasn't buying any more ginger ale. He looked at me as if I was crazy. I told him that it was full of High Fructose Corn Syrup. He shrugged it off. I know. It's easy to ignore it and to think it's not a big deal. But - it is a big deal. The stuff out there in our food and our household chemicals are scary. If I can just be a bit more aware and a bit more careful - then I feel like I am doing the smart thing for my family.
I would like to thank Janis and Felice for enlightening me on this kind of stuff. It's fun to research. It's fun to find healthy alternatives. It's fun to be a bit greener everyday and a bit healthier.

HFCS is definitely not something you want to consume too much of. It's a sugar syrup that is put in almost everything (to sweeten) because it's cheaper than plain sugar. There's a lot of speculation about it's contribution to the increase in incidence of type II diabetes. Good lookin' out for the family!
Real maple syrup doesn't have HFCS in it and is SOOOO much yummier than the processed junk. Stonyfield Farm yogurts are HFCS-free, too.
It is OUT OF HAND how much HFCS is everywhere!
Did you ever go to that A Life Less Sweet blog? It has a lot of good info about HFCS-free alternatives.
As they say, "Ignorance is bliss."
But, in my opinion, it is much more empowering to be informed!
You go, Bridge!
