Adopting a doggie???

Before Brian and I became the proud owners of our little doggie, Gracie, we were interested in getting a West Highland Terrier. You know - the cute little white dogs? Anyway - I started looking into finding a breeder and I came upon a lady in Lansingburgh who breeds Cairn Terriers. Since she was so conveniently located, and she had a puppy readily available - we ended up with our little Gracie. That was 6 years ago. So - no Westie for us.

Anyway - the other day, we came upon someone walking a dog. The dog was a Westie. Brian made a comment and said, "Maybe we should rescue a Westie."

Huh??? That was a shock to me. I mean - I know he loves Gracie. But - he also can't stand her yappy little bark. I always have to remind him that Gracie's breed is meant to hunt squirrels, chipmunks, and any other type of rodant. So - if she sees that type of rodant anywhere near her yard - she is going to bark, yap and try to eat the prey.

Anyway - Brian said it would be nice to have a companion for Gracie and I agree. Plus - the thought of providing a home to an animal that needs a loving family - kind of warms my heart.

Anyway - I started researching about how to go about rescuing a Westie. I filled out some applications. One rescue coordinator got back to me right away and told me that they wouldn't even consider me because we have 2 young children. MMMM. Interesting. Another rescue coordinator contacted me and said they have a 13 year old male in Long Island who needs a home. I guess his owner moved and she gave the Westie to her parents and they don't want the dog. Isn't that sad??? Yes. I thought so.

So -what to do???? The dog's name is Scotty. Supposedly he is good with kids and other dogs. Brian is hesitant because of his age. I feel like we could provide an older dog a home and give him a happy life. I am not sure what to do!
