We had a dine around on Saturday night and the theme of the night was "Cuban." One of my dishes that I was assigned to make was baked plantains.
Now - I have never bought a plantain before. I knew that it looked like a banana. A very big banana. But -I wasn't sure what to do with it and how to buy it and I was very unsure of how it would taste.
So -off I went to to do my research. I googled "How to buy Plantains." It turns out that you can buy them in some various colors. If you buy them greenish-yellow - they are not as ripe. If you buy them black - then they are much sweeter. Regardless - you need to cook them. You should not eat them raw.
I was quite skeptical about the plantains. But - I followed the directions and when it was time to eat them - I was pleasantly surprised. They were good. In fact, they tasted like - well - they tasted like starch! If you like starch - then you are in luck. If you don't -then well - you are out of luck!
The plantains didn't go over so well with everyone at the dinner table. In fact, there was a lot of left overs. So - I took them home and sauteed them up with more oil and salt and again - I was pleasantly surprised. They were delicious! I think I might have to start buying plantains from now on.
