CrabCakes

During our vacation, we took a ride down to Cape May. Cape May is at the very tip of New Jersey and is an adorable town with Victorian Houses and cute shops and restaurants. During our adventure we went out to dinner. Brian ordered crabcakes, I ordered a cheddar and bacon burger and Maddie had grilled cheese with fries. The deal was that I would cut my burger down the middle and Brian would get half, and in turn, he would give me one of his crabcakes.

So - we sharecd our meals and I have to say that both the burger and the crabcakes were the most delicious ever! Brian raved about the crabcakes and suggested that we should make them for dinner one night when we returned home. So - this got me thinking. I had never made crabcakes. I was going to try. I made a mental note to myself that I would search for a great crabcake recipe when we returned back to the Capital Region.

Fast forward 3 days - We arrived home and after going through the mail - I turned to the newspapers. Every Thursday there is a section of the newspaper that has recipes. Now - would you believe that theme of the recipe section for that week was crabcakes??? I kid you not. There were about 3 recipes in the paper for different types of crabcakes! I took this as an omen. I was really meant to make some crabcakes. I mean - what better time to start whipping them up? It was crabcake fate.

Fast foward another 2 days - Today I happily went to the fish store and bought 1 pound of crabmeat for my crabcake recipe. I returned home and prepared my recipe. I followed the directions precisely and felt so proud. I figured Brian would be so excited since he had specifically asked for me to make crabcakes. I baked the recipe. I served it. We ate it.
Brian looked at me. I looked at him. He said, "Do you like it?" I got defensive. I said, "Yes. The flavor is good." He looked at me again. "Okay, fine," I said. "I guess that it is slightly soupy."

The truth was - that it was REALLY soupy.

The recipe never called for me to form the mixture into round cute little crabcakes like the kind in the Cape May restaurant. Instead it told me to mix it and put it in a casserole dish and then bake it. So - it was kind of like eating soupy crab mixture. We ate it. I felt disappointed. Brian made another comment. He said, "Maybe next time - you can find a recipe that you actually form into crabcakes. I think that would be better."

Needless to say - I feel a bit crabby.

I love crabcakes. One of the reasons I like going to Baltimore is all the great crab they have!

Your next ones will be great, I'm sure. If there were three in the paper, you have two more to try.

Glad you arrived home safe and sound.
